Clinique has by no means gone to the ends of the earth for their “acne solution”, but the formula does include a few ingredients that are known to make a difference.  The formula includes:

• Witch hazel
• Alcohol
• Benzalkonium chloride
• Glycerin
• Menthol
• Baking Soda

• Salicylic acid
• Butylene glycol
• Disodium EDTA

Ingredients like glycerin, alcohol, baking soda and menthol are all pretty familiar to us. Basically they provide a way of clearing away some of the excess oil in your skin and also to neutralize the acidic effect of the more active ingredients, as well as moisturizing and numbing your skin a bit.

The most potent ingredients in the solution are salicylic acid and witch hazel.  Witch hazel is a fairly common astringent that shrinks skin cells and clears away oil.  Salicylic acid is a potent agent for increasing your skins replacement process and can help kill bacteria trapped inside pores.  This is a great ingredient, though we usually recommend its natural source – white willow bark extract – which is milder on the skin.
