Clinique Acne Solutions Clarifying Lotion

Clinique Acne Solutions Clarifying Lotion, an acne fighter from one of the kings (or queens) of cosmetics, offers a simple acne lotion with some good potential with a few drawbacks…

Clinique Acne Solutions Clarifying Lotion Ingredient Analysis

Clinique has by no means gone to the ends of the earth for their “acne solution”, but the formula does include a few ingredients that are known to make a difference.  The formula includes:

  • Witch hazel
  • Alcohol
  • Benzalkonium chloride
  • Glycerin
  • Menthol
  • Baking Soda
  • Sodium borate
  • Salicylic acid
  • Butylene glycol
  • Disodium EDTA

Ingredients like glycerin, alcohol, baking soda and menthol are all pretty familiar to us. Basically they provide a way of clearing away some of the excess oil in your skin and also to neutralize the acidic effect of the more active ingredients, as well as moisturizing and numbing your skin a bit.

The most potent ingredients in the solution are salicylic acid and witch hazel.  Witch hazel is a fairly common astringent that shrinks skin cells and clears away oil.  Salicylic acid is a potent agent for increasing your skins replacement process and can help kill bacteria trapped inside pores.  This is a great ingredient, though we usually recommend its natural source – white willow bark extract – which is milder on the skin.

Clinique Acne Solutions Clarifying Lotion Effectiveness

This lotion has provided reasonable results for most users, though when used alone it has proven somewhat weak at fighting chronic acne trouble.

Clinique Acne Solutions Clarifying Lotion Safety Concerns

The main complaint seen with regular use of this product is over-drying.  As it is meant to be a general-purpose anti-acne lotion, it is often applied to the entire face and sometimes the back.  Because of the alcohol and salicylic acid combination, many users report excess dryness and, occasionally, peeling.

Clinique Acne Solutions Clarifying Lotion Value Rating

As this is ultimately a pretty standard formula with nothing particularly costly or exotic, the price tag is understandably low.  For $13.50 plus shipping you can order it online from Clinique.  There is a return policy which is always good to see.  In general, as mentioned before, this is a reasonable product that will provide decent results for a good price. It may be a little harsh on your skin, but most cheaper products are.
